ROSARY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN.
Blessed by the Canons Regular (Crosier-Fathers) of the Holy Cross in Europe.
An Indulgence of 500 days can be gained for every single "Our Father," or M Hail Mary," recited devoutly on one of these beads, without it being necessary to say the five decades or to meditate upon the mysteries. This Indulgence is applicable to the souls in Purgatory. The faculty to attach these special indulgences to Rosaries, was given by three Sovereign Pontiffs to the Canons Regular of St. Augustine of the Order of the Holy Cross and confirmed by Pope Leo XIII. March 14, 1884 who moreover declared this faculty to belong to the said Order.
Here it may be well to add a few words on Rosaries in general. When Rosaries are rechained the indulgences remain, even if the beads are not placed in the same order as before. The indulgences also remain when unblessed beads are put in for broken or lost beads, provided at the time they are put in, the unblessed beads are less in number than the old beads left in the Rosary. But when the Rosaries are sold or utterly destroyed the indulgences are lost.
The indulgences of both the Crosier beads and of the Dominican Rosary can be gained by one recitation of the Rosary, provided the Rosary has both indulgences attached to it. (Pius X. June 12,1907.)
A plenary indulgence may be gained by reciting five decades of the rosary in presence of the Blessed Sacrament. This indulgence can be gained each time the rosary is said in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. The Blessed
Sacrament does not have to be exposed to gain this indulgence. (No. 360)
