A History Of The Mass And Its Ceremonies In The Eastern And Western Church -Rev John O'Brien A.M.

It is an opinion which it would be rash to differ from that the use of lights at the celebration of Mass is of apostolic origin. Cardinal Bona and all liturgists of note strongly maintain this, and many passages of the New Testament seem to warrant it (Bona, Rer. Liturg., pp. 206–294).
