Saint Lucy
Virgin and Martyr
December 13
Very little is known about Lucy but most accounts state that St. Lucy was born in Syracuse Sicily. Her father died when she was very young. At an early age she privately made a vow of virginity. After praying for her mother at the tomb of St. Agatha, she was cured of a long standing illness. Following this, she confided in her mother concerning her vow. Her mother then gave her blessings for Lucy to persue her religious aspirations. St. Lucy’s suitor became enraged upon learning this and accused her of being a Christian, and arranged with the ruler of the province to have her executed. Popular accounts have it that prior to her martyrdom, she was tortured and her eyes gouged out. She was martyred in the year 304 A.D. in Syracuse. Today St. Lucy is invoked as patron saint of the blind. Her Feast Day is December 13th
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, grant that by the intercession and merits of your servant, Saint Lucy that we might also bear witness to your Son Jesus, by living a life chastity, and that we too may have the courage to die completely to sin, and turn to you. Grant this through Jesus Christ, your Son. Amen
