One Nation Under God with Liberty and Justice for All -by Richard Bedard
Our nation which once enjoyed freedoms guaranteed by our Founding Forefathers in the Declaration of Independence and at least the first two amendments to the US Constitution are being slowly eroded by our government. ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–‘The First amendment to the US constitution Freedom of Speech, Press, Religion and Petition states: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. The Second amendment: The Right to Bear Arms states: A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.
Free Speech has been usurped to include bigotry against Christianity and especially the Catholic Faith and has thus become the last acceptable prejudice in society. In Charles Colson’s book titled “How Shall We Live?” the author describes a former art exhibit at Princeton University. The university itself has a strict code of conduct that demands respect for all members of the campus . The exhibit consisted of among other things a torn image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and another made out of nude torsos of women fashioned into a crucifix. When students complained to the dean of the Wilson School, that the art was offensive the dean defended the exhibit for its educational value and said it would remain.
Freedom of Religion has been breached by our government to what amounts to freedom from religion. Religions are being forced to practice things which go against their core beliefs. One prime example is the recent Health and Human Services Mandate . According to our US Bishops: This means that most Catholic ministries would be compelled to provide and pay for “services” (i.e., sterilization and contraception, including some abortifacients) that are a clear violation of Catholic teaching. It rests on the appalling notion that the federal government can tell religious ministries what is religious. (source: http://www.nccbuscc.org) At the same time, God is being systematically removed from our schools, our courts, and our public squares.
We already have known since the passage of Roe vs. Wade that the Right to Life is no longer guaranteed in all its stages.
And in the recent news, we have sadly learned of the tragic school shooting which took place in Newtown Ct. And now our government again self righteously is jumping on the band wagon of political correctness. Will stricter gun laws keep assault rifles out of the hands of innocent law abiding citizens or out of the hands of criminals? Often, criminals already have superior guns than the average policeman carries. Thus we see attempts at our government to abridge the Right to Bear Arms. This author is no fan of assault rifles however this proposed gun control legislation illustrates yet one more attempt at eroding our freedoms guaranteed by our Constitution.
Our nation has embarked on the slippery slope of controlling our freedoms and liberties. When will it end? Now I ask you to fast forward one hundred or more years from now.Will termination of life be mandated for the elderly someday because they have ceased to be as productive or useful as younger adults or because they are ill and have become a burden to society? We have already seen what can happen to people like Terri Schiavo. Will it someday be illegal to give birth to children with birth defects, deformities or inherited illnesses? Will Catholic doctors be forced to terminate the pregnancies of mothers because the child won’t be blue eyed and have blond hair and is not expected to reach the IQ threshold level already determined as the legal level by our government? Will young couples be limited to having no more than one child in order to control the population?
It is certainly true that one does not need an assault rifle for hunting purposes. One could certainly argue this point to win people over to gun control. But with the increasing violence we see in the news due to drug abuse often resulting in home robberies, another person might certainly argue that guns are not a bad idea to have to protect oneself and their family. Home invasions by gun toting criminals are indeed on the rise, even those in broad daylight.
Some of you are probably thinking ‘why not use our heads with all these laws and freedoms?’ If we are to do this, then let’s be consistent. If we make it illegal to own assault rifles because they can kill a great number of our school children in short order, why do we have laws which guarantee the right to life except that we can kill millions of our children in the womb without anyone’s permission.? What about alcohol consumption control or perhaps watering down the alcohol content? Why can’t we limit the number of drinks a person can consume in one hour to insure that they can’t get behind the wheel and kill someone? There are motor vehicle laws against it, but why can’t we control it in our bars directly? Never mind driving drunk, what has destroyed more lives, families, careers, and marriages than alcohol? Or what destroys a person’s wholeness and spiritual life, not to mention again marriages, relationships, families and civilized society more than pornography? Why not make that illegal? Why can’t we legislate cooling off periods for procuring abortions like there are when you purchase a gun in order to prevent Saturday Night Specials? It would give the mother time to re-think her decision rather than act in the heat of despair? If it is morally wrong for a person to commit suicide, why do so many defend the right to kill another life in a woman’s body?
Does a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? (Jas 3:11). Neither should our government. Our society is gravitating towards what Pope John Paul II aptly called the culture of death I call heaven and earth today to witness against you. I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Choose life, then, that you and your descendants may live, by loving the LORD, your God, obeying his voice, and holding fast to him. (Deut 30:19)
The Catholic population in the US is 60plus million. If only we could join our voices, what a sound we would make! A sound which no one could ignore. Imagine what we could do if we could only find a way to muster all those votes and combine them with the numerous other Christian voices who agree with us. But who will heed the call?
I know your works; I know that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either cold or hot. So, because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. (Rev. 3:15)
Only when all men stop listening to the sound of the voices of this culture of death and begin to listen again to the voice s of decency and morals of the natural law placed in each of us by our Creator can this society again be truly free. It seems to me the phrase:”One Nation (almost) Devoid of God with Liberty and Justice for Many” is more relevant for our present times.
